Beginners guide to On-Page SEO: Rank Your Website No.1
SEO simply means Search Engine Optimization, this is what comes in handy when you type a keyword you have written an article on, and it shows up on the first page of Google.
By the way, google ain’t the only way to get search traffic, Google isn’t the internet, google is on the internet, google is a search engine, meaning where you search for things and you find answers and relevant sites to the searched keyword.
There are other search engines as well, there is Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckgo, and many more, you need to optimize your site to get traffic majorly from Google, but do not neglect the other search engines as well.
SEO is divided into two parts:
1. On-Page SEO
2. Off-Page SEO
ON Page SEO
A major portion of the SEO is done on your website itself, there is a golden rule of blogging. Keep it simple and sweet, simply put just KISS it.
Do not do anything in extreme, everything in moderation. For example do not put many keywords into your articles, in the hope to rank the article for every keyword, that is illegal.
Yes, according to the search engines, that is. It is called ‘keyword stuffing’ and search engines penalize sites that over-optimize their sites to rank no. 1.
Title Tags
When you are on WordPress you have titles like H1, H2, H3, and so on. The H1 tag is the term your site is going to be ranked for.
If your H1 tag includes: How to train your dog to sit, it will show up to the searches like – Train my dog to sit, dog training for dogs to make them sit.
But you cannot expect it to show up on searches like how to teach your dog to jump on command. Do you get my point?
So the first heading on the WordPress editor that goes like “Add your heading” in grey is the default H1 tag make sure you include your focus keyword at least once in the H1.
Now, you can choose to make any heading H1 H2, and H3, but the best practice would be to do them in an organized way.
For example, you wrote a post on Dog training.
Use H2 for only major headings like Preparation before dog training. Equipment needed for dog training.
Now you can write a detailed review about equipment and put the equipment name in H3 or H4 depending on the importance.
For instance: Equipement no.1 A Good treat, put this into H3 and then put an H4 heading under it: Types of Treats for Dog Training.
So you get it now, H2 as a topic, H3 as a subtopic and H4 as a sub-sub-topic, and so on.
Make sure you put your target keyword at least once in any one of the H2 tags on your article.
Meta Description
The first paragraph of your article is automatically picked up as the meta description of the article unless you are using any SEO tool like Rank Math to change the default settings.
A meta description is what appears under search results when you type in a keyword.
Make sure you put your targeted keyword in your meta description as well, If you are using Rank Math it will show you the exact numbers of characters allowed to write.
Permalink
The link to this page is https://shifuguide.com/beginners-guide-to-on-page-seo. The prefix of the site’s name is also the permalink for this particular page.
Now I wanted to write a post about SEO that is why I have put SEO keyword in the permalink of this article. I could have written a more long-tail one.
For example, https:shifuguide.com/Complete-SEO-Guide-For-Beginners-in-2022. But this would be very long, which is not recommended also vice versa: https:shifuguide.com/SEO is not recommended.
Because this way I’m indicating to the search engines that my article should be ranked on the keyword SEO but you see that’s likely impossible to rank my site on such an ultimately highly competitive keyword.
Keep it short and simple, and target low-medium keywords only.
Internal Links
Internal links are links to your site from one article to another. Just like you can find on this page, I’ve linked to my previous posts, which all are internal links.
Internal links help reduce your bounce rate and also rank the linked articles if the original one is already ranked in a good position.
Bounce rate: when a user visits one page of your website and leaves without jumping or wandering to other pages on your site.
If your article “how to train dogs” is ranked in no. 1 position of google for the keyword “dog training” then interlinking your other article “how to train cats” will help your second posts rank for the keyword “how to train cats”
Anchor text
Anchor text is the text that is containing links to the other pages of your or someone else’s site. You will not paste links in this format – https://shifuguide.com. Instead, you will paste it with an anchor text like this – Shifu Guide.
It is necessary to put your focused keyword of the article in the anchor text that you are linking to. It indicates to the search engine that this other article is also great on this particular keyword (anchor text).
You cannot wish to get ranked for the wrong anchor texts.
For example, you link your cat training page with a simple “Click Here to Read More” anchor text. The mistake beginners do.
Now, tell me do you want to get ranked for the keyword: Click Here to Read More, or do you want to get ranked for “How to train cats”.
I hope my point is clear to you now.
LSI keywords and Bolded Text
LSI (latent semantic indexing) keywords are keywords and terms that are similar or related to the article’s target (main) keyword.
You cannot use the main keyword more often than 3% but you can use related keywords. For example, Dog Grooming is the main keyword, then Grooming for dogs and Dog hairstylist are LSI keywords that you can use in your article.
Also make sure to Bold the LSI keyword in your article, to signal the search engines that this particular word here is more important than the rest of the words in the whole article.
